Colt M4 .22 target results here!

Well, in the other M4 .22 thread i promised an accuracy test from my new M4 .22 Ops rifle that i just received a couple of days ago. I was going to shoot copper plated bullets, but i found some lead non-lubed bullets at Wally World and they were cheap so i figured i could burn Federal Auto Match bulk 325rds for $12 instead of Eley Tenex for $14 per box of 50. I tried shooting with the open sights but i discovered that my eyes are no longer good enough to see the target and the front sight clearly at the same time. My groups measured about 1" at 25yds with a 15mph cross wind..........not good! I was disheartened at my poor vision and the only thing to do was mount a scope and go from there. I installed a cheapo Tasco 6-24x44 varmint scope that i had laying around and had hesitated to use on any of my nice rifles. I figured this rifle wouldn't be capable of exceptional accuracy so i might as well throw a cheap scope on a rifle that would be shooting cheap ammo! Well i got a bit of a surprise after i mounted the scope and gave it another try. This Federal Auto Match ammo is plenty capable of good accuracy and the rifle is more than capable! I shot a couple of shots to get on the target and then adjusted the scope a couple of times before i got down to shooting 5 shot groups. I fired 25-30 shots total with zero failures to fire or eject. Absolutely perfect functioning and this thing is a blast to shoot although the trigger is a little heavy for me. I pulled the trigger assembly out and will tune it lighter for another day. I will include photos of the rifle/scope as well as a couple of the targets that resulted in this heavy crosswind. I fired two shots (top left corner of target) adjusted the scope and fired three shots (slightly lower and right) and then fired targets 6, 7, and 8. I was shooting off of my deck with the magazine and pistol grip resting on a deck chair and the forend resting against the deck railing. Definitely not as steady as my benchrest, but it was pretty good since i didn't want to get out all of my equipment in this heat. Not bad considering all things..........this rifle certainly has some promise. I'll try it another day with really good ammo, a better scope, and a good benchrest. Then we'll know what this thing is really capable of!

Okay, I must admit I am impressed. Excellent accuracy. You should try a good comp trigger in that thing, you may just get 5 shots in one hole
I wonder who is making their barrel blanks? Good stuff.

Unfortunately the trigger in this rifle is a proprietary model that is unlike any in my other centerfire AR's. I have replaced triggers in AR's and really like a tuned CMMG 2 stage model with a 6oz first stage and a 2lb second, but that is a no-go in this rifle. The trigger components in this rifle are enclosed in a two piece cast housing and although i have discovered how to remove the entire unit from the lower, i haven't cracked the case open yet to inspect the innerds. No, i'm not quite ready to destroy my new toy just yet! Honestly i don't think it will be that tough to tear it down and achieve a better trigger although several hundred dry fire cycles have smoothed the trigger and lightened it considerably from the first time out of the box. I really don't expect anyone to manufacture an aftermarket trigger for this .22 after looking at it. Probably wouldn't be enough profit to make it feasible. I think this rifle will shoot much better with a tuned trigger and some really good ammo although it is pretty good as is. I never shoot my .22's at much greater distances than 50yds, so that will probably be my next test after some trigger tuning.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Your eyes were never good enough to see the front sight and the target clearly at the same time. They don't work that way even when new.

These guns have Walther barrels, so they will be accurate guns. The results pictured prove it!

I ordered one yesterday, I just hope it doesn't take that long for the shop to come up with one.

From what I've been reading Umarex supposedly designed the gun, Walther produces it in Germany, and one if not both of them have an agreement with Colt to build it and sell it.

I own a Walther P22 and it's a deadly accurate little pistol, but it is toy like when you examine it. I have heard people bash the heck out of this rifle for being toy like to cheaply made. I didn't see any of this when I handeled one at a recent gun show. The only problem with the show was this rifle takes seven days to get the paperwork cleared.

After some thought about buying another rifle so soon (I just purchased an AR) I decided to take the hit and buy it anyway. Personally I think they are great guns for the money. And I'm with you on the eye-balls not being what they used to be. But between great guns and good glasses, that takes care of the not seeing well part.

    bustamove,
Let us know when you get it and also when you have had a chance to shoot it. I haven't talked to an owner yet who doesn't just love it!

I have received no word yet on the one I ordered, but I'm patiently waiting. I have done a bunch more reading about it though. From what I've seen the little Colt doesn't seem to like the bulk packs of Remington .22 LR's?

From what I have also been reading, it shows most who buy this rifle rate it at either four or five stars from a highest rating of five. And it seems Umarex also has a top notch Customer Satisfaction rating. Most guns are repaired and sent back within a week or less. And very few Colt .22's actually have problems to begin with. That is a great start.

I'm sure you all already have this info, but just in case I'm going to give it to you. It's a video that shows how to field strip, clean and adjust your Colt .22, and also shows how to adjust for standard or high velocity ammo.
