    "Hunting" w/my M4 OPS

    Hello,

I have had my M4 OPs for about three weeks now, and it is rapidly becoming my favorite plinking gun, but I also want to use it to hunt small game.

With the BUIS installed, I was hitting about 6 inches high at 30-40 yards, which is the distance that I'll be hunting at. So, I installed a Simmons 4x32 Magnum scope. With the scope, I can keep all shots w/n a quarter-dollar sized hole.

So far, my M4 has been using Federal copper-plated bullets. I have had two FTF and no FTE. The two FTF were when I had put 30 rounds into the magazine. However, by backing off to 25-28 rounds, I have not had any trouble. I haven't adjusted the recoil spring.

I did give the gun a good cleaning when I took it out of the box. I had some trouble with the pin, so I used a wooden dowel and a rubber mallet to drive it out. I've also used this set-up on my other AR's. I flushed the whole receiver with CLP and ran a bore-snake through it.

Anyway, I've been wanting to go hunting w/my rifle, but I really don't want to get into the woods and fight mosquitos and ticks yet. So, I needed something besides a target to shoot.

That's when an idea hit me. I have "sniped" at plastic dinosaurs with my air rifle for years. But, I've never used a "real" rifle on them. So, using a set of plastic dinosaurs, I set them up in various postions and backed off about 40 yards.

At that distance, even with the 4 power scope, they were pretty small. But, by using a sitting-shooting position, I was able to keep the cross-hair on them. I then went "dino hunting."

As you can see from the photo, the bullet entered the front of the dinosaur with a nice .22 caliber hole and then exitted the back with some mushrooming. At 40 yards, a solid hit made the dinosaurs jump about 2 feet into the air before falling back to the ground. With the minimal recoil of the .22, I was able to make multiple hits on them before going down-range to reset.

Now, I can't wait to get in the woods and try my rifle on some real game.
