    Colt 1883 12 Gauge, Custom?

Hi Everyone, I'm new to this site but have been a gun collector for many years. I have had this gun in my collection for a number of years and would like to find out some information on it. It is model 1883 with 30" barrels, I believe the serial number to be 204 (as marked on the barrels and frame) What makes this gun a little strange is the stock as the pictures show. It looks like it was made for someone that was right handed but left eye dominate. The stock is fitted very well and checkered the same as the fore stock and has no butt plate. I always thought that this was aftermarket but have been told that it could have been factory.
I welcome any comments that viewers or members may have about rarity and value.

Welcome, I would also subscribe the the theory that's it's after market. The right handed, left eye dominant disposition of the shooter would almost have to be fitted to the shooter to allow perfect cheek weld. Something that the factory probably would not have done. Very time consuming. Nicely done and probably actually helps the value for historical purposes.

Thanks Kid Sopris, I assumed that this must have been done outside the factory as there is no serial number on the lower tang only on the frame and the barrels. Unless the earlier guns were not serial numbered on the tang.

That's called a crossover stock. You are correct it is for a right handed left eye dominant or a person with a damaged right eye. I agree it's aftermarket and a good job.

I have also heard this type of stock called a "Crippled Stock".

The Colt 1883 stock is now reproduced

I forget who is doing them, but at the Grand American Trapshooting field in Sparta, IL, I meet with a large stockmaker that stated they are reproducing the stock.
