    Colt/Sharps rifles

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has had experiance with the Colt/Sharps

rifles of the early 1970's? I haven't seen any in awhile. There seem to be

various grades as far as wood & metalwork.

    I have one 30-06

Love shooting it. Right now I am developing a cast bullet load that is easier on the shoulder, wallet and barrel. Mine is numbered outside of the 500 range. I have been told that these were ones given out to magazine writers to test. It does not have the cartridge trap or extra engraving on the lever. The wood is top rate. The bluing appears royal blue.

    Colt Sharps

I have been a collector of these since they were first introduced. Colt sold 503 of the deluxe model which had fancy wood, cartridge trap, Leupold scope and sold in a hard case with cleaning equipment and sling. They were serialized from CS 000- CS502. They were offered in five basic calibers: 22-250, 243, 25-06, 30-06 and 7mm Mag. They also made a couple in 375 H&H and 50-70. Colt also offered a lesser grade and they were serialized in the 2000 range. These did not have the cartridge trap and the wood was plainer.

    Scope for Colt Sharps

I recently picked up a Colt Sharps. It came with a 1st generation, Denver made, Redfield 3x9 Accu Range scope. Did the Sharps come from the factory with the Leupold 3x9? I'm thinking of replacing the Redfield with a correct Leupold. Does anyone know the model number of the Leupold scope?
    Thanks

The Colt Sharps rifles were all shipped with the Leupold 3x9 Vari-x ll scopes. If you want to be technically correct you can contact Leupold and they will give you the serial range and letter designation of there scopes for the early 1970's. If I may ask, what is the caliber and serial number of your CS ?

    Scope for Colt Sharps

Hello Coltguy: SN CS217; 25-06; 26" bbl;engraved cartridge trap; checkered; right hand cheekpiece. Came with the brown envelope and instructions, and the vinyl covered box for patches, wipe cloth and oil(all of which were gone). I was wondering about the Redfield scope because in the Aug.1971 Outdoor Life article(p.102) "The New Sharps", they have a Sharps pictured with the Redfield scope. Also, in the 1984 Gundigest,p.24 article, the middle photo shows what appears to be the Redfield scope mounted (I can't be totally sure, I'm looking at photo copies of the article). I was wondering if other scopes(besides the Leupold) were available when the factory order was placed?
Put a few rounds through it to make sure everything worked. Very little recoil. Very comfortable shooting.

    Colt Sharps Scope

I just picked up a vintage high gloss Leupold 3-9 Vari-X II scope that has a duplex reticle that fades from heavy to thin rather than abruptly changes. Would this be the style of scope that was used on the Colt factory supplied sharps rifles? thanks

The Redfield scopes that you see on the first Sharps rifles were on guns built by the Sharps Arms Company of Salt Lake City, Utah. After Colt bought them and started marking the serial numbers with the CS prefix then they shipped the guns with the Leupold scopes. The Colt rifles also had a slightly different stock and were supplied with the cartridge traps on the delux models. These were serialized between CS000-CS502 and were shipped in the green Gun Guard cases with supplies.
