    Seeking 57 Coltsman info

Hi Folks, new to this forum. Just picked up a Coltsman in 300 H&H with a FN mauser action. Front sight only, serial#C3114. Monte Carlo Stock. I bought it because of the caliber, I have a weekness for certain one's and the 300 H&H is one of them. My question is the comb section is scaloped out like you see on some of these modern thumb hole stocks. The finish looks factory and it fits very well. I put some foam on the stock to bring it out level and there is no way you can get your face close to looking down the barrel. I know in the 50s some stock designs were a little out there and was wondering if this is factory or altered. I have had several people try it and they agree if the wood was there you would not be able to look down the top of the rifle, sights or scope. Any info would be welcome, Thanks Bob

Are you sure its a 300 H&H? I don't believe that was ever an advertized caliber. How about 300 Win. mag.? Can you send a pic of the gun and I'll look in my catalogs and see if looks factory. An original Colt 57 model was made in 57 and 58 with only 243 and 30-06 chamberings. The same gun was made after that but not marked "57" in added calibers such as 300 Win and 308.

Welcome to the forum. Mike probably has this too, but here is a 1961 catalog page.

My Gun Traders Guide list the .243 and .308 for the Models of 1957 Rifles.

It also list Custom Bolt-Action Sporting Rifle 1957-61 in .30-06 and 300 H&H Magnum. It is listed as having a Monte Carlo comb with cheek piece, pistol grip and checkered. QD Swivels

Hi, The barrel is marked 300 magnum. The early mod. 70s were the same way. This was the only 300 mag out there till the Win mag. I shot a 300 H&H in it and that is what it is. Also checked it at the show and it would not take a Win. mag. or a Weatherby. I will try to post some pics soon, Thanks Bob

    I learned something new today.

I just found out the 300 Win mag. was introduced in 1963 so the gun would have to be an earlier cartridge.
