Probably the same reason that we destroy captured AK's, SKS's, etc in Iraq and Afghanistan. It makes even less sense the way we do it. At the same time that we are destroying fully functional captured arms we are buying AK's to arm the rebuilt Iraqi military and M16's/AK's to arm the Afghan military.
