    colt ar15 m4

does anyone know why the collapsible stock is so short on these rifles? I noticed it right off when I first shot it then my son mentioned it It seems like it was designed assuming the user would have at least a 2 inch padding on his shoulder. Even at full let out, its just way too short. I guess I could glue on some sytrofoam or something on the butt to make it longer. Is there any commercial product that fits over the butt that makes it fit better? Other than that we both love the rifle.

    capstan,

Both the Magpul ACS and the Vltor EMod are longer than a factory M4 stock. The Magpul ACS can also be outfitted with a .70" buttpad if the stock itself doesn't add enough length for you. The ACS is 7.95" (+ .70" buttpad) and the EMod is 7.75" with its buttpad installed.

The collapsible stock was designed for military use originally. Shoulder one well wearing body armor and the short design comes into it's own, this is what it was designed for. For civilian applications many of us desire a longer LOP which is why the aftermarket stocks like the ones mentioned above have been so well received.

Some one makes a rubber butt pad that slips over the collapsable AR stock that gives you about 1/2" additional LOP. I don't know who makes them, but the ones I have are marked with a large "U.S.", a flaming bomb, and A123168. It's probably very similar to what capstan has mentioned. I don't believe it's an issue part, but they work well and help with felt recoil on the shoulder. Cost is $8-$10. I have them an all my M-4 type stocks.
