looking for colt ar 15 for my wife

I own a colt ar 15a2 sporter II, bought back in early '80's paid about $900. Looking for my wife a similiar gun so parts will be the same, looks like it would be better to sell mine and buy a new rockriver, armalite , etc. What are your thoughts. thanks in advance. PS... Will be use for personel defense and protection " if everything falls apart"

I would recommend against buying a Rock River for serious use. Their quality control and materials leave a lot to desire when you consider that you could get a higher-quality brand like Colt, BCM, or Daniel Defense for about the same price or a Spike's Tactical for between $800-$900. Any of these brands would be a better bet than Rock River and would give you higher durability and reliability.

    Cool New AR

Sir, I recommend you not sell your Colt sporter II. Owning a Colt is special. I sold three Colt's firearms back in the late 60's an have kicked myself ever since. Look at the Colt 6520 which is light weight and in the $800 range used. As 6920 said, If you don't want other Colt, go with the BCM, DD, or ST.

    Good luck,

    Mark

What ever you buy, I would recommend a mil-spec gun. Colt started the receiver block (which is not a big deal) and the larger fire control pins, and the two piece front take down pin. You can overcome the front pin, but if the AR has the large hammer/trigger pins you are stuck with other than mil-spec parts You can blame Bush I and his Sec. of ED for the non-standard AR configurations IMO. An early SP1, with the light weight 16" barrel might be the way to go for your wife. Just expect to pay a lot of money for a nice one. Mil-spec is the key. My wife spent four years on active duty in the Army and several years in the Reserves, and she is well versed with the M-16. She could pick one of mine up today and go through any malfunction drill and put rounds on target. In the case of your wife, training is a big deal. Military training is the best, but in the absence of that, you will need to spend a lot of time with that weapon. I know a lot of AR-15 owners who don't have a clue when something goes wrong, and it will, with an AR.

I would advise one that has a rail so you can mount a bipod, they can be heavy for a lady.

A couple of years ago I put together a lightweight RRA for my wife with a couple upgrades/fixes. I seriously doubt she will ever outshoot it. The balance of a standard (or heavy) 16" barrel just wasn't good for her. I see that there is/will be a lightweight flattop Colt 6720 now (Colt Carbines). That would have been my first pick if it had been out at the time.

Give some serious thought to a 6450 in 9mm; the recoil is substantially the same and the muzzle blast significantly less than the same rifle in 5.56.
