    Smile New Toy

I just picked up my new Colt SP 6920 MP-B 5.56 I like the Magpul extra's on it. I was reading some post on another forum & the Magpul furniture was getting negative remarks...is there something I'm missing here??? It came with the forward hand grip & the upgraded stock & railings.. sorry.. this is my first AR15...so I don't know the "AR lingo".... I can't wait to shoot it. I need to know what optics to use...way to many for a "AR newbie" to choose from.. It has 1:7 barrel. What grain should I start with for an indoor rifle range???Also thinking about mounting a shooting tripod. I have one mounted on my Airforce Talon .22 air rifle & I use it all the time...that's my other toy Thanks for any help that "you" can offer to this Newbie.....hey at least I knew to go with Colt

    txfishnshoot,

Congrats on your new aquisition! You did your research and chose a quality carbine. Were you able to get some range time in this weekend?

Before anybody gives you advice about what optics or accessories to get maybe you should tell us what you intend to use your carbine for. Will you be using it for home defense? Hunting? Competition? Do you plan on training with it or will it just be a plinker?

William B thank you. I didn't get the chance to shoot this weekend. My main purpose for my 6920 will be for home defense & indoor / outdoor range plinking. I know I want good quality optics... for "old eyes"....I am a member of the retired grandparent's club .I also have a question in regards to cleaning products. I have read other post about "lube" being used. I have always used bore cleaner & gun oil. What are your suggestions???Thank you sir for your time & help.

Most anything will work for lube as long as the bolt carrier group (BCG) is good and wet. Some people even use motor oil. I personally use EWL Slip 2000 or LSA, but Rem-Oil, CLP, etc are pretty adequate.

Since you plan to use your carbine for HD the first things I would recommend investing in are a good sling, good magazines (GI or P-Mags), ammo, and a basic level training course. After that then I would recommend taking a hard look at optics and a weapon-mounted flashlight. As for training, College Station, TX seems to be kind of a hub for firearms training in your state. Try Googling "College Station, TX firearms training" and see what comes up. Feel free to ask more questions here or PM me if you want.

Another good thing about the training course is that you will be able to see what kind of gear others are using on their carbines, if it works well, and they may let you put a few rounds down range through their firearms to see if their gear works for you.

For an HD carbine I would recommend an Aimpoint or EOTech. The Aimpoint PRO seems to be getting pretty popular as a solid, more affordable optic.
