Question Best ammo for 6920 ?

I still haven't shot my new SP 6920 MOE 5.56/ .223 with 1:7 barrel. Ok... I'm new to this AR stuff .. I have never fired one in my life. I should get my order of Eezox in today & plan on cleaning it today & shooting tomorrow.Do I need to do a "break in" for my first time shooting it ?I'm confused with the caliber to buy & what grain... do I buy 223 ammo or 5.56 ammo???? I know I need a heavier round for the 1:7... anything over 60 - right??I will be shooting at a 100 yard indoor range & I purchased the 6920 for home defense & beforethe liberals get a ban again on this type of rifle. Thanks again for the help....JW

Is your rifle stamped Cal. .223 or 5.56 ? That is what you should use as a determining factor. I suspect in a very few occurrences that some may encounter a problem chambering a 5.56 in to a .223, but I don't know the % of those. ALSO DON'T USE STEEL CASE Ammo in US Made Chambered rifles. You are correct to get the heavier bullet weight I would try the 69 grain bullets.

I like the military surplus M-855 5.56 62 gr. ammo for my Colt A-4 reproduction, Colt M-4, and my Colt Commando. They have 1/7 rate of twist barrels.
I use the older military surplus M-193 55 gr. ammo in my Colt Mod 601 reproduction rifle, XM-177E2, and my Colt SP model AR-15 because they have the older barrel rate of twist of 1/12.

Your 6920 is chambered for 5.56, which means that you can use 5.56 or .223. For training purposes you should be able to use most steel cased ammunition with no problems. The only steel cased ammo that's ever given me trouble was Ulyanovsk. I guess at $3.59 per 20rds I got what I payed for. Expect to replace your extractor spring slightly more often and to have a stuck casing here and there, though, if you do decide to use steel cased ammo.

As far as the bullet weight, the 1/7 twist is ideal for stabilizing longer projectiles such as those found in 62-77gr ammunition. However, you shouldn't have any problems if you want to use less expensive 55gr ammo for training or plinking. I have about 3,000rds of 55gr ammo through my 6920 and have had no issues with it.
