Measure from the muzzle to the rear of the receiver, plus a few inches.
You need the rod to reach the muzzle and still have enough room at the rear of the receiver for the handle to not quite touch the receiver.
My 16" plus muzzle brake needs a rod at least 25" long, not including the handle.
Buy either a Dewey stainless steel rod or a carbon fiber.
A lot of top shooters are using carbon fiber because they're either perfectly straight or they're broken.
