I had the choice between a 6920 and the 6940 for my first AR and choosed the 6940 because of the rail already installed. At the time I had the choice, the 40 was 150.00 difference in price (more). I like to keep things simple so all I added was a Eotech and a light to the rail. I did just drop a Geissele SSA in it today and would highly recommend anyone to do the same. The difference is night and day ! Enjoy your new Colt, either way you can't go wrong !

William B offers a good analysis of the use of a home defense weapon. I used to subscribe to the shotgun idea as well, but two things have changed my mind.
The size, shape, and mag capacity of the weapon is one. It's a lot of gun to use inside a house, and a folding stock or pistol grip version is little help. The shotgun has formidable recoil; if you score with the first shot, you're golden, but it will be a long count before you can get back on target and get another one away. Too, it's a handful for smaller statured members of your household.
The second issue is what you now see in squad cars. It used to be that the 12ga pump was about standard, but many cruisers are now sporting ARs. I'm sure this is a matter of training/familiarity, versatility, and reduced recoil, but it's still a good choice.

It looks like there are three high-level choices for home defense: AR-like weapons, shotguns, and handguns. All have their good points and not-so-good points. I'm taking my wife to the range so she can get comfortable and familiar with the three options. Whichever she feels most comfortable with is what she will end up designating as her "home defense weapon of choice." It will be interesting to see how it goes!

I would certainly be interested in what she chooses. My Wife likes many of the same guns I do, but when it comes to what she prefers or favors most then, it becomes a difference between us.

I think $500 more is a small price to pay for a $320 barrel , $351 Knights Armament Rail Ras, Ambi Safety , and the True M4A1 markings on the lower. I like them all but the Socom is a nice option from COLT.
