I have a 6940 on order. I could not stand the fixed front sight on the 6920 models when using an EOTech style device. It is like sitting in a ball park seat with an obstructed view!
I'm currently in the market for a new Colt Rifle, I've narrowed my search down to a few different models and was wanting a few opinions to help me decide on the right gun in the end.
I am looking for a LE6920, I really like the new le6920mp editions as I am a big fan of magpul gear but also really like the le6920 Socom, been a huge fan of the military's M4A1 rifle and the closest thing to it civilian wise would be awesome. I understand both are milspec and the only difference I see besides furniture between the two is the Socom has a different barrel and has ambi safety lever. Both seem to have all milspec features M4 feed ramp, F- marked front sight base., staked gas key screws, Heavy buffer.
so I guess my next question would be is trigger group better on the Socom or Magpul version?
thanks in advance for any insight, I am leaning towards the socom version since it seems to be the real deal on every aspect of the rifle, but wonder if it worth the extra money over the magpul version.
thanks guys

no one else has either of these guns or anything? I like the Socom model but at $400-$500 more is it really worth it? just making sure there isn't huge differences between the two I am overlooking, Heavy Socom Barrel, different trigger group, then the furniture instead of magpul stock, grips, handguard, trigger guard and grip. MBUS sight vs Matech sights. As far as I know both have same as far as most the internals go.
I would get either the 6940 or 6940P--- more options!!!

I have the 6940 and love it. The Socom in my opinion is over priced. The 6940 is the best of both worlds between the 6920 mp and the Socom. I don't think the 6940P buys you much for the price. I to did not want the front sight visible in my Aimpoint. If you buy the 6920 or 6920mp and decide later you want a quad rail you will end up paying more in the long run than for the 6940.
Nothing is fool proof to a truly talented fool.
Doubt seriously if there is any difference whatsoever in triggers; the easy and obvious solution is to install a Geissele SSA; they're about $170 and a huge improvement in any AR.

Okay I have the SOCOM but can only compare it to my other AR, a 1986 era R6600 HBAR. Mounted a 2 to 7 scope on the SOCOM, at 3X the front sight pretty much disappears and at 4X and above it is not bothersome at all. I do not use or like those red dot sights,,,up close I figure either a laser (a TLR4 laser/light which I mounted on the lower rail) or the sights (scope is on a quick release mount), and at distance I want the scope.
Trigger is the only thing I do not like about the SOCOM, it is pretty bad. On my HBAR it is really nice, but the SOCOM has creep and is much heavier. Have no idea if all the other Colt ARs are like this or not. Should add I only have maybe 200 rounds thru this so hopefully the engagement surfaces will smooth out a bit.
Now so far the SOCOM outshoots my HBAR. I mean using factory MILITARY ammo I am getting pretty good groups at 100 yards with this thing. Going off memory I believe some brands of ammo are shooting in the 1 1/2" size consistantly. I am testing maybe 6 or 7 different loads (LC, WIN, South African, Malaysian, etc.). I got great groups with the HBAR (1" average) but that was with handloads and match bullets, it was around the 2-3" average with military stuff. I am really impressed with the SOCOM doing this with bulk military ammo I have laying around.
Plus the SOCOM looks so cool!!!!!
Now as to the price difference. I have over 6000 rounds thru the 1986 HBAR which I bought used in 1989. If I get such life out of the SOCOM what is 300$ in the long run...under $15/year, plus I have the joy in owning it. I understand it is foolish to pay for more than what you need or want, but if you WANT it then I would not let the price difference deter you unless it is either the "magpul now" or wait until you have funds for the "SOCOM who knows when". Colts are not like computers or cars...those you keep long enough and they depreciate to zero value. I paid 625 in 1989 for my HBAR at a time when non HBARs were going for 525. What can I get out of it now?
Thus only you can answer if the price difference is worth it, sorry I can't help with the magpul version. Frankly it wasn't even in the cards for me, I wanted the SOCOM from the start.
Why don't you look at the thread directly below re: Colt 6940's?
