    5.56/.223 ammo

is there any place out there that has any 5.56/.223 ammo in stock that isn't outrageously priced?

The pickings are pretty damned slim right now.
While I have no way of knowing what action, if any, will be taken by our masters in DC, a ban on future sale of 'high cap' magazines is more likely the upshot of the current furor.
Try to be patient, and keep an eye open for good ammo. I'd avoid the steel cased stuff.

Not to my knowledge. 5.56 is selling for about $1.00 per round if and when you can find it.

    In short, no.

Price gouging is at an insane level right now. And no, I do not buy in to the "well it's supply and demand" BS. Federal, Winchester, and Remington still sell their ammo at the same price. Distributors and dealers need to stay cool and not try to shaft Americans right now. It has become insane but I thinkk if everyone would settle down a bit and stop acting like they are on an episode of that doom prepper end of the world show then ammo sales and stock would stabilize.

Sorry, a little frustrated because I usually take the family out to the range after Christmas and blast a case of 5.56, 7.62x51, .45 ACP, and 9MM. As you can expect, cases of ammo are either non-existant or stupid expensive.

I don't have an answer to the question. The places that hold the line on price are sold out almost immediately. Those who cranked up the price in some cases still have something to sell.
I'm not sure where CDNN is right now, but a catalog ordered/printed long before the current insanity showed up today; it had 5.56 at regular prices.
Wonder if our buddy B. Hussein has any idea how many guns/gun related things he's sold...he's done a better job promoting private firearm ownership than the NRA. Be nice if somebody blamed him for Sandy Hook.

Can you explain why NOT to buy steel cased stuff, and how do you know?
    Thanks

I have shot thousands of rounds of steel cased thru 2 diff Colts, no issues. I don't mind shooting brass, I just don't like to waste money.

While I personally would only use brass .223 match stuff in something like a Colt Competition, I have been using Wolf and other steel ammo in my AR rifles for over a decade now. The fella in this video really hits it home. He has some follow ups as well.

What I have heard, here and on ARFCOM, is that steel cased ammo works fine in guns designed for it...that is to say, Kalishnikovs with their tapered chambers were meant for it from the get-go. Complicating the issue are the variety of coatings used on the steel cased stuff, which may or may not be accumulated in undesired areas.
If you love steel cased for blasting ammo, that is your choice.
Personally, I hate to use it in a good rifle...a rifle that may be hard to replace in the near-term future.
