Colt Signature Series BP Revolvers? Valuable?

Back in the early 1990's, I bought a Colt Signature Series 1847 Walker and 1849 Pocket. They were on sale at Gander Mountain for $299 and I thought they were really beautiful. I told my dad about them so he bought the 1851 Navy and the 1860 Army versions. I now have all four with their boxes and paperwork. We shot them, but we cleaned them really well so they're in perfect shape. They've been on my family room wall now for 12 years now.

Are these black powder guns collectible/valuable? Do you think they'll go up in value in the next 20 years or so?

The reason I ask is that I've got a little bit of "gun money" and I don't need any more guns. I'm thinking about having the 1849 Pocket or the 1847 Walker engraved with 75% American Scroll by Michael Gouse. If the guns are just regular, run of the mill, bunches of them made, never going to be super collectibles...well, then I might just get them engraved so that I love them even more. With no intention of ever getting my money out of them with the engraving.

    What do you think? -Steve

Re: Colt Signature Series BP Revolvers? Valuable?

Like any other Colt guns, they are increasing in value. Premium Colts (unfired, mint in the original box) will always be in demand. If you desire to know more, the 5th Edition Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Arms is available on Amazon for $16.47 (free shipping with $25 order). I have an older edition of the book and it is very informative, although the values are far out of date by now. I will order a copy of the 5th edition, when the new Standard Catalog of Colt Firearms is released on December 5. The two books will make up an order over $25 and I will get free shipping!

These Second and Third Generation BP revolvers are considered genuine Colts (not knock-off reproductions) and can be lettered through Colt. They will appreciate in value and sought after by collectors. They are your guns, engrave them if you want but they will be immensely devalued.

If they are for your enjoyment, engrave them and pass them along to your heirs. If you think that sometime in the future you may sell them, then a collector will most likely pass them by since they are not "factory". I am not knowledgeable on the Colt BP and don't know if any were engraved out of the factory. If any were, and you sent yours in to be done in that style by a current Colt Master Engraver, who knows what their value would be in 20 years.

Re: Colt Signature Series BP Revolvers? Valuable?

I just received my copy of the latest edition of the Blue Book on blackpowder guns (see my earlier post) from Amazon. I am truly shocked at the listed values on some of these guns. If the book can be believed, the prices on some of these guns are going up as fast as Diamondbacks and Pythons! If you have some of these guns, you should get one of these books to keep up with the values.
