As I recall, Colt actually drilled a hole in the sloped surface of the front sight to install a luminous tube.
Around that time, the only way to install a night sight on a sight that was not removable was to cut a dovetail and install a block-like insert with a tube in it.
This looked pretty clunky with the cube shaped insert sticking up out of the sight blade.

Drilling the hole like Colt did it required some skilled machine work on that steeply sloped and narrow sight.

Searching around I found this page of a 1995 Colt catalog.

The DS on left looks to have no front sight at all. Is this another variation?

You just aim down the channel in the top of the gun.

I can't seem to turn up ANY info on these guns but understand that it was a "limited" production run. I believe they were made in either 1995 or 1996. Here are a couple sneak peek pics:

If you look at the box you may see it doesnt actually call the gun a detective special although if I recall the barrel says Detective special. The label on the box just says: "Double action revolver"

I didn't even know that I wanted it, until I saw it. Every time I think I'm done with Detective Specials something "new" comes along that keeps the collection growing. This think this will be number 26...

No, it's just a picture that was accidentally cropped.

I have one with regular front sight. My understanding is that they came out the Custom Shop. Mine was ordered by a then retired member of the Reagan administration. Only a few were done in hard chrome. I thought that they all had the RD prefix serial, but the letter posted above proves this incorrect.
