    Colt Factory refinishing

More than once I have seen mention of what a great job the Colt factory does on refinishing revolvers.

When a gun is sent in for a factory refinish can they sharpen up worn edges, get rid of pitting and such? What does a refinish cost for a typical DA revolver?

    thanks, Rob

I've had 3 guns refinished by Colt and I couldn't be happier. The only problem is the long turn around time. The last one was a renickel Python that came back spectacular!!!!

My suggestion to you would be to call them and ask your questions direct. They are very friendly and helpful over the phone.

The number is 800 962 2658, hit 1, then 1 again to get to a live person.

Let us know what they say.

Thanks for the information, glad to hear you've been pleased with their work.

I don't have a gun that needs to be sent back, just wanted to get a handle on what they can do and approximate cost to factor into cost of buying used guns.

What they can do is limited only by how bad the existing finish is.
Polishing out deep pits removes metal, and may show it as irregularities in the surface.

Worn edges can often be restored by the polisher.

Colt can also re-stamp markings on some guns.

Colt has some of the best polishers in the industry, and they appear to be getting their people up to the standards Colt once enjoyed as being the best in the business.
Since each gun is an individual case, Colt has to see it to determine how much can be done, but people are amazed at what Colt can do.
In most cases, guns come back looking like new.

Colt also offers changes in finishes.
As example they can change a blued gun from the standard blue to the highly polished Python blue, or change from blued to nickel or nickel to blue.

I sent my Python back for a refinish on June 7, and I just got word it is in. I'll get it this afternoon. Can't wait to see it.

My Python was shipped to them July 9, I talked with them yesterday and they estimate it will be back mid-September.

I think I'll have to buy another gun to ease the frustration of waiting for it to come back.....

I had my Detective Special changed to Royal Blue and had the internals brought up to factory specs. It took 4 1/2 months but it was worth the wait. The reblue cost 275 dollars and it was the best $$ I ever spent..Mike
