    2nd Generation SAA Colt Buntline

    Hi all!

I'm the new kid on the block, hope everyone is well and hope someone might be able to help me out with a lil information.

I have a Buntline Special, cal 45, 12" barrel with stag stocks, mfg. date is 1957. There is a set of numbers at the base of the barrel a B2XX. I believe it is some kind of special marking but not sure for what. Anyone have an idea of what the number represents? and possible value of the gun? Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Paladin, Buntline barrel numbers are a three or four digit number (preceded by BB) that appear under the Buntline barrel. The BB # designation was discontinued around the 45,000 serial number range. There were only about 4000 2nd gen Buntlines made, which makes them quite rare. I have always felt that they were undervalued when compared to standard lenght 2nd gen's. The earliest 2nd gen SAA were for the most part of very high quality. I have no idea why Colt put the BB number on the gun, but as a collector, I think it is a nice touch.

I have been looking at one myself, but the price is too high and the guy doesnt seem to like life, let alone anyone who is interested in looking at it. Of course cash talks, but it still is nice to like the guy you are dealing with.

As it is turning into a seller's market, what would u say is a decent price for one of these bad boys?

Bow, If I were looking for an early NIB (black box, fixed firing pin, flat top hammer, rubber grips) 2nd gen Buntline, I would be happy to get it for anywhere near $2000.

Re: 2nd Generation SAA Colt Buntline

Thanks for the info. Your right it is a BB followed by 3 numbers. I have been considering putting it up for auction. I'm no gun collector by any means I stumbled on to a small collection out of luck or just being in the right place at the right time. I'm debating whether or not to get a letter on it from Colt. I spoke to colts customer service and the lady said it was made in the 2nd year of production in 1957.

I have noticed in researching, you are right about one thing the 12" it not given the due it should be. Not sure why the 4 1/2" and 7" are so much more popular. I've also read where people have cut the barrel down? To me that makes no sense, why destory a peice of history regradless if it sat in a box or was used for something else but those are my own thoughts on it.

I alway thought it would be great to know the whole story behind any vintage item. Like how, when where and why.
