The serial dates to 1982. It looks like just a 3" DS of the day (as would a 3" Dframe anything) marked Police Positive (as was always the case) with the rubber stocks that were used later. Not much of a prototype IMO, but perhaps one of a kind. Does anyone remember it from the auction?

No, but I did research on it since my "Commencement Issue" came from the same auction. My Archive letter shows mine left the factory for this auction at the same time the Police Positive did. It also says: 'Retained by factory as sample and display pistol', but because mine was serial number 1. Interesting stuff.

Here is a copy of the text and link to what is left on net of the auction:

[h=2]**Colt Police Positive Double Action Revolver, Sample of Reduced Cost Polish and Finish, with Factor[/h] Lot # 346
Serial no. P61558. .38 Special caliber, 3-inch barrel with "Police Positive/.38 Special Ctg." on left side and tiny maker and address marking on left. Matte black finish of lesser quality, including in polishing process. Orange plastic safety disk on cylinder breech. Checkered rubber wraparound finger groove grips, with gold-plated rampant colt medallion inlays.
Condition: Very good to fine. Handling marks, wear.
Notes: Sample and display revolver, including of reduced cost and level of finish, kept by factory.
Provenance: Colt Factory Archives Firearms Collection.
    Estimate: 300 - 500

What's interesting too, is that it sold at auction (2008) for $400. Now offered for $1100 more. Is its uniqueness and Colt provenance worth this? I guess so if someone buys it at that price.
