Depends if they have parts. Call Colt Customer Service they should be able to tell you. OR check the web site for price list.

Not sure current cost... They did a 1960s DS for me a few years back for a couple of hundred ~ but I had some other work done at the same time.
I got the Royal Blue finish on mine. The gun looked brand new when I got it back. One of the best refinishing jobs I have come across. lettering still crisp and edges still sharp.

Interesting questions. I have had several guns refinshed by Colt over the years and they do magnificent work at a reasonable price. I think the least I ever paid was in the $175-250 range. Usually there was some minor repair work involved. On the repair parts question, The few guns I have sent for refinish only, have never required any additional work, but I wonder if Colt encounters a mechanical problem on a gun sent to them for refinish only, do they require that it be brought back to minimum specs before they will complete the work? I could see where it might well be a liability problem for Colt to refinish a gun and return it to the owner with known defective parts. I have never run into that situation with Colt or S&W, and the question raised here makes me wonder if others have. Has Colt ever refused any of you a refinish job unless they were allowed to return the gun to safe minimum mechanical specs?

I don't understand what you mean to reblue a 1951 Detective Special to 32 New Police

CALL Customer Service. I believe at least it use to be policy, that if they have a part to replace something that could be broke. Otherwise they might turn it down. I have personally run into a situation where I wanted a gun refinished, but they would not do it because of a lack of back up parts.

A 51 DS would have the dual-tone finish if I'm not mistaken. I don't think Colt will redo that type of finish. They may or may not reblue the gun but I doubt it will come back with the dual-tone finish.

Colt75 you are correct a 51 would have the dual tone (my favorite finish) finish. And Colt does not do that finish. In fact I called a number of the famous refinishers and could not find anyone who did that refinish (Ford's told me how it was done and indicated they played around with it but do not now and are not considering offering that refinish).

I agree the Colt work is very very good, but keep in mind it will come back with the very shinny, very dark finish, not the 50's looking blue finish.

My prices are probably dated but in 2010 Colt charged me $275 + $30 shipping to Royal Blue a Python. In 2011 Colt charged me $325 + $30 shipping to Nickel a Python. Both jobs took 5 - 6 months from shipping to return. Speaking of shipping you will need to overnight the gun to Colt and from CA that cost me $60. Call Colt Monday to confirm their 2012 prices.

All things considered I felt it was worth the time and money, but in your case your 51 DS will be returned looking like a 93 DS.

Per Colt's price list, they now charge between 275 and 375 plus shipping.
