    ColtOfficial Police .38 info???

    Hello all,

I have never owned a gun before and was just given this to me from my Grandpa's estate. Gramps was a cop in Los Angeles. The barrel says "Colt Official Police .38". I have the serial # of the gun as well.

Along with the gun is a holster that is stamped "Safety Speed Holster"..."Montebello, CAL." Scared me to DEATH when I pushed on a spot on the holster near the trigger and the damn thing sprang open!!!

Also there is a case with handcuffs from the "Peerles Handcuff Co." in Springfield, Mass. There is a stamp #185521 on them?

To be honest my intent is to sell these. I have many other things from Gramps that will remain in the family, but I just don't want a firearm. Can anyone give me an idea of what a fair price should be?

    Thanks,

    Bill

I can only tell you that its a 5" barrel pre-war Official Police model / which you probably already know.
However, you'll glean a little more info here about age, price, etc ... by posting the serial number.
We dont need it all, just the first 4 digits followed by two x's

Looks like a Safety-Speed clamshell holster...favorite of the LAPD in the 60's through the 80's.

    Hi Abe,

No, I didn't know it was pre-war. If we were talking about antique golf clubs I'd be the man...but I didn't know how to get the gun of the holster!!! The serial # is 5426xx

Like I said, I just want a fair price to ask for.

    Thanks again,

    Bill

Bill, I can understand and respect that you dont care to keep the gun. Consider this. How about YOUR kids or grandkids? I bet it would be a most charished heirloom to one of them someday. Will $300 bucks really change your life? That number looks like 1929? Are you real sure it was LAPD and not los angeles county? The uniform looks more like the sheriffs or possibly chp. (calif highway patrol)

    Hello feralmerril,

Thank you for your thoughts. It's not about the money, just not comfortable with firearms...bad experience when I was a "stupid" young kid growing up in LA. The "prize possesion" that will will hopefully ALWAYS stay in the family is a 1933 Carl Eickhorn German Nazi "SS" Dagger that Gramp's told us came off a German officer who was trying to kill HIM! This dagger would bring THOUSANDS of dollars...but it stays in the family.

Better ask other family members if they want it before you sell it. Perhaps a cousin will want it.

I think you're right. Looks like an LASD deputy in the picture...clamshells were also favorites of the Los Angeles Sheriff Dept.

Are there any markings on it other then Colt markings, ie; Police Dept intials or numbers?? It looks like a very nice example. I think in the $375.00 to $500.00 range as far as price. Post it here in the classifieds -along with the holster as a set - I'll bet it'll sell fast. Does the picture of "Gramps" go along with it?? The whole package along with a Colt letter might be pretty cool.
