    Need schooling on SAA .22's

I have an itch to at some point have some Colt SAA 22's to complement my 5.5 inch 3rd generation SAA 45's. I am a little confused about the different names I have heard for these revolvers, such as Frontier Scout, Peacemaker, etc. Are these different guns or just different labels? Which model is the closest simile to my 45 SAA's, and does Colt still make them or is this something I will need to find used? I have a couple of really nice Ruger single action 22's to shoot and to have my grandkids shoot, but they just are not Colts. I don't need any really high dollar collector pieces as I will shoot them a lot as long as they are authentic Colts. Any expert advice to give me a starting point on my search would be appreciated.

Our Resident Expert Buckspen, should be along shortly.. Y'all must just need to get the Other Book By Don Wilkerson....

The Peacemaker, (Being all Steel) is the one that you want. No Colt doesn't build these anymore, so Used and Collector Grade are what is out there.

As Kid stated, the peacemaker made from 1971 until about 1976 will be the closest match as it is a steel frame with case hardening. Generally the peacemaker sells for more than the earlier scout made with an alloy frame with a black anodized finish. The peacemaker barrels lengths offered were 4 3/8, 4 3/4(rare, first year only), 6 and 7 1/2. The scout was offered with a 9 1/2 barrel also. The 4 3/4 barrel length did protrude slightly from the ejectory housing. I have a peacemaker with the 4 3/8 and a scout commemorative with a 6 in. The 6 in really points well and is well balanced IMO. I used to own a scout with a buntline barrel of 9 1/2 and may try to find another in the future.

I had a peace maker that the theives wanted as badly,as all the other 22 that they stole. Very good gun. Hit where I wanted , Hated to lose that one.

I don't have much to add to the previous comments. I suggest you get a copy of Don Wilkerson's book "Colt Scouts, Peacemakers and New Frontiers in .22 Caliber". It is an excellent book and by far the best reference work on the Colt .22 caliber SA revolvers. It is still in print and available from Carol Wilkerson for $40 postpaid at CollectColt by Carol K. Wilkerson
Then start watching auctions on GunBroker and see what sells and the prices paid. That should give you a good idea of what the guns are worth. My personal favorites are the nickel plated "K" revolvers and the short barrelled Peacemaker .22s.
