    Python value help

I have lurked for awhile but I am finally posting. I have a 1978 4" nickel Python. I traded for this awhile ago and have been wondering about the value. It is in good condition but the nickel on one side of the trigger has peeled a bit. Other than that it is great. It came with the original Pachmyer grips and a set of nice real elephant ivory grips with the Colt medallion embeded in them. This is my first Colt and I don't know much about them, so any help is appreciated.

Congratulations on your purchase, and welcome to the forum. A 1978 Python did not come with Pachmayr grips. The original stocks are walnut, with straight-cut checkering below the medallions. The ivory stocks would probably be custom-made. The nickel four-inchers are really nice looking, and are probably more in demand than those finished in Royal Blue.

It would be a great help if you could post some pictures; especially those ivory stocks. As to the peeling on the nickel, this can be repaired by Colt. However, the lead time on repairs is now approaching six months.

    Again, welcome.
    Best, Dennis

I cannot tell much by the one pic, but if it has even a little nickel peeled off of the finish, it would definetly take it out of the collector catagory and into the shooter grade. With the pachmeyer grips on it I would estimate value around 900 give or take a little. The set of real elephant ivory grips should be worth around 300 or a little more by themselves. JMHO.

It's a pretty nice looking gun. I'd get some flitz or Mothers Mag Polish and go to work on it. It would probqably do wonders for the nickel. The ivories look good too. It's a good start into the world of Colts. Hows it shoot??

If I remember correctly, Flitz is not supposed to be used on nickel guns.
