    second gen saa question

the three digits stamped on my loading gate of my saa made in 1964 don't match up w/the serial # on the frame.
i have a hard time believing the loading gate was switched in the past.
was there a problem or recall on these things back then?
anybody see mismatched parts straight from the factory?
i haven't had this gun since it was new, so i'm not sure of it's provenance.

If 2nd generation single actions are marked like late 1st generations, your loading gate has an assembly number on it....it's not the same as the serial number but rather it should match the assembly number on the rear right side of the frame visible under the grips.

You are looking at the sides of the straps and that is where the serial numbers are located.

I'm not a second gen guy, but, if they are stamped like the late 1st generations you should see a number on the back of the frame below where the right backstrap screw goes in. You mayhave to remove the backstrap to see it but I don't know for sure.

The assembly number is on the bottom of the frame, hidden by the trigger guard, which must be removed. The assembly number found there should match the one on the loading gate.

Did they move the assy number to the bottom of the frame on the 2nds? I know the earlier 1sts are on the bottom and then it was moved to the right rear frame on the later 1sts.

Sorry, I misread and you are right, coltsixguns. On 2nd generations the assembly number should be on the back of the frame.

    coltsixguns, you are correct.
the number is on the back of the right side of the frame and nothing but the removal of the grips is necessary to see it.
    number matches w/the loading gate.
    thanks for the info.

No problem....I know 1st gens pretty well and "assumed" that 2nds were marked like late prewars but wasn't for sure.
