    Detective Special questions

    Hello,

A buddy of mine has 2 Detective specials he wants to sell. Both snubbies with the very short barrel. Here are the descriptions of each DS:

    1. Blue, large Hogue grip on it, finish is almost mint ~ 99%. Note the blued DS looks brand new except missing the factory wood grip (Hogue grip instead). It has a perfect mirror blue finish, not a scratch on it.

    2. Nickel, original factory grip, minty, a few handling marks on the grips, nickel finish on the gun looks just about perfect though

I dont know the exact dates for each, but both are 3rd series (73-86)

He is asking $500 each. I am thinking about getting the nickel one because it has the original wood stocks and I dont have a nickel snubbie. Also it would hold up better in humidity, etc...

My questions are which DS is more desirable? Which one would be more valuable / collectable, etc...??? Also is $500 a good price for a DS??

I dont have a DS yet. Just a couple of 1911s and python. Note I usually shoot my guns and not just put them away in the safe.

I've had a few of these over the years and $500 sounds like a pretty good price, especially if they are in as good of condition as you described. Just my humble opinion.

Just compare your guns to what is offered on Gunbroker...I think the decision will be easier.

IMO, the nickel is the better deal. They generally sell for more than blue. If they are as you describe, I would buy them both if they were in front of me.

$500 is a good price. Hard to find a minty one on gunbroker these days for under $600. I did quite a lot of looking before I found this baby on another gun forum. I paid $500 shipped...but the seller also threw in a like new Sparks PMK holster with it....after I sold that on ebay for $157...I decided I got a much better deal than I originally thought...:0

The gun came with medallion pachs below but another member of the same forum gifted me the above wood...

$500 is a very good deal. The nickel guns seem to bring slightly higher prices.

I'm partial due to the purchase of a '76 nickel DS. At $500 I think you're good on either.

Limited to one I'd get the nickel because all my D's are blue. $500 is a good price in the condition you described. They're a very good CC revolver and they're not making any more of them. Offer him $850 for both...that's what this old gun trader would do anyhow...
