pre WWI Officers Model .38 Flattop Target

I found this gun with 8 minutes to go in the auction, just by accident. Wasn't really looking for anything to buy. With the price where it was, I thought I would throw in a bid. Got it with one bid.

Now, that happened so fast I really don't know if I did the right thing.

    Here is the auction..

What do you think? I don't know a lot about these.

The gun is probably worth what you paid (I love the long barrels), maybe more, but I do not believe a 1917 gun will have the high polish blue claimed by the listing. The pictures do not appear to show the high polish "black mirror" early finish.

I think you are right about the finish sir, I hope it is original though. I copied the pics so they will be easier for y'all to see..

If those stocks are like S&W early stocks, they are $$.

I tried to find out more about these, couldn't find too much. I really like the stocks. I have seen pics of earlier guns without the medallions, but these dished ones are nice, and the diamonds in the checkering are cool. Kind of like S&W diamonds. How many years did they make these stocks?

    Very nice gun, Terry!
I think you did OK with the price. The lettering and stamping seems to support the gun has the original finish.
The old style Colt stocks are incredible.
Yes, Colt stocks of this style and era in v.g. or better condition are costly.

I think it does have the old high-polish finish judging by the barrel. I think you did okay for that price. I like it.

I like it too. I have a soft spot for adjustable sight revolvers from the 1920s and before. The 7-1/2 inch barrel is extremely cool. Nice score!

Wait until you shoot it !! The ones i have are very accurate ! I really like them. Very nice actions and triggers. i'd love to get a set of grips like that.

ps I'm not to far from Libertyville - I would gladly go get for you and try it out !!!

Well, the guy who sold it to me is off to the Super Bowl right now. He works for the NFL and sells guns on the side. Cool jobs! Maybe you should go over there after the Super Bowl on Monday. He has a few nice Colts for sale!

You did great! I too saw the auction, I almost bid, but I already have a near mint and earlier one, so I am not hungry! You did well.
