Did Colt make a Nickel Officers Model 38 Revolver?

    colt3.jpg
I found most of the information that I was 1923 Officers Model 38 S.N. 4995xx. It is currently in Nickel. It does not appear to have been refinished. (no wavy flats, edges are crisp, roll marks show edges where they were rolled)

I am trying to find out if Colt did make these in Nickel finish. If they did, is there any markings that might prove that this is a factory finish? There is a "Y" below the serial number.

Anyone know of other things I should look for that would prove one way or the other?

You can weigh the "appearance" of originality against the opinion that an OM might have been ordered in nickel for "dress" or show, but not likely for competition target shooting. There would be no markings that would prove it either way. Only an archive letter will testify to the way it left the factory.

The VP proof and the inspectors number on the trigger guard were stamped after the nickel was on the gun. There should be signs of cratering on their edges if factory. Also the rampant colt stamp is cratered like this on blue guns, not sure about nickel. The factory letter does nothing to tell you about the originality of the current nickel on your gun! The letter only tells how it left the factory! The originality of finish must stand or fall on its own merits now!

Some better pictures would help make a determination. From what I can see it is a nice looking gun.

This is the only side shot I have. Patent numbers on top of the barrel stop at July 4, 1905 or 6. Side reads Officers Model 38 and has maltese crosses before and after the rollmark.
