Congrats on a rare gun, I collect Dragoons and the 1st model is my favorite. What is the serial number.
My grandfather left me a colt dragoon 1st model. I would like to have it appraised. Does anyone know of a colt expert in Michigan that I could take it to? Or possibly a gun show that will be held in Michigan this winter? Thanks.

Post good and many pictures here and there are members here, such as Texas Man, who can give you a reliable appraisal at no charge.
"Gun Show Experts" is an oxymoron.

I'm including some photos. My grandfather got the gun when he was working on the telegraph lines in California around 1898. It is missing a piece from bottom of barrel and I believe it was converted from ball and cap to cartridge before he bought it. The gun will go to my grandson someday, but I'm just trying to find out some information on it and I'mcolt.jpgcoltny.jpggun.jpg curious about its value. Thanks for your help.
Wow, that thing is really interesting! I have no idea about values on conversions. I don't usually see original Dragoons that have been converted.
The serial number is 6346 and appears 4 times on the gun.
Appraisal will be interesting due to little data available on which to base it. Appraisals generally are done by reviewing, comparing, judjing, etc known past sales of like items by an experienced person. Doubtful if any like items likely are known.
Below pix of my Colt 1861 Navy and its converted brother. If the 'appraisal community' cares to give a number for each, it may be useful for comparison with your Dragoon. Both in about 60% condition with no bubba indications.
