I believe those boxes were used into the early 70s - I don't know when those Stocks started. It wasn't one of those fake boxes was it??
I just saw a very nice nickel Python that looks unfired but it has the 3rd generation grips yet comes in the early wood grained box with the red cardboard insides. Shouldn't Pythons in this style box have the second generation grips with their semi-circle upper checkering?

I know how to tell the fake labels and newer boxes because I have the originals but I do not have the early boxes. I do know Colt put the serial number on the bottom of the box with grease pencil and I am waiting to find out about that.
