Colt Model 1896 DA 38 Front sight correct?????

I'm considering purchasing this Colt. S/N dates to 1899. About 35% bluing left and according to the seller all the numbers match and is in good mechanical condition. However I noticed that the front sight was notched. All the 1896 models I have seen are a half moon shape front sight. Could this have been modified or changed out? For $325.00 does the forum feel it is worth that? The grips also are etched with the S/N as well. Sorry about the pics, but that's all the seller has at the time. Thanks to all.

Modified. Don't go a penny higher than $325 and make sure it is mechanically sound. You could probably do better if you looked around. A few extra dollars would probably get you one much nicer. I just bought this 41 also made in 1899 on Gunbroker for $380. $402 with shipping. Perfect mechanics, bore and chambers with a lot of original high polish blue finish.

Thanks for the response. It turns out the seller sold it to someone else after I did some leg work for him regarding year and confirming model and other info regarding the gun he was selling. All I asked him was to please wait until I had some response from this forum. Another buyer offered him $350.00 and didn't even ask me if I was still interested before selling it to someone else. Most of that info came from this forum of which I'm greatful for. Now knowing it was modified. I thought so. Guess next time I won't offer help. If it's meant to be, it's meant to be. If not, so be it. Once again thanks for everyone's help. This is a great forum and I'm glad you can still go here and get reliable info when you need it.

I think I will. I'm already seeing much better finishes. A little more money, but nicer stuff.
