    1892 Colt New Army

I picked up a 1892 New Army today in average condition and is ser. 843 so I know it was made the 1st production yr. The grips are almost perfect and still has part of the original blue. I have no idea what the gun is worth can anyone give a idea. I would say for a 120 yr yr. old gun I would rate it well above poor. I think for it's age it is a nice gun. It does have some pitting but not very bad but also has some pretty blueand perfect grips and the ser. # is the same on both grips. I figure a 3 diget ser. # 1st yr. of production is is a nice gun to haveDSCN0153.jpg

That's not a first year 1892. The triggerguard is of the later style and the grips would actually say "1892" below the rampant Colt on the grips. The "843" number you see is an assembly number. It's on the cylinder latch and under the crane correct? The serial number should be on the butt of the gun. Your gun was made towards the end of the run on the 1892s sometime shortly before the Army Special was introduced around 1909.

If there is no S/N on the butt, which I think you couldn't have missed, the gun may have been military issue. For fear of prosecution, some former owner may have ground off the Army markings there, taking the S/N with it. Or it could have been stolen at some point and the S/N ground off to prevent tracing.
