    Question Can't Find Serial Number

I have a Colt Diamondback .38 CTG revolver with a 6" barrel. I can not locate the serial number. I read on another site that it's "on the butt"...I took off the grips and din't find any numbers anywhere on the frame.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Also, I purchased the gun in 1980. I notice when I release the cylinder, the number P30874 is imprinted twice...about an inch apart. Does anyone know if that's the serial number...it doesn't seem to match some serial number charts I've seen on other sites, so I don't want to assume it is the SN.

    Thanks!

I believe that is your serial number. SHould be on the frame when you have the cylinder opened.

Thanks! I hope so because those are the only numbers I can find anywhere on the gun.

That is indeed where modern Colt revolver serial numbers are; on the frame under the crane opening, facing that on the crane itself and on the inside of the sideplate. P30874 dates to 1981 per the available charts. If you indeed did buy the gun in 1980, that is possible as serial numbers were sometimes used out of sequence for one reason or another. This is a sticky thread with serial number information: For DOB ( Date of Birth) Questions , Please Look. Your number appears in the second referenced chart.

BTW, CTG is the abbreviation Colt used for "cartridge".

Butt Serial Numbers ( with Colt ) ended with the last of the New Army and New Navy Revolvers in 1907 or so, far as I know.

After that, Colt Revolver Serial Numbers were stamped in the Crane Knuckle area.
