Python barrel question

I've had a new Python (blue) 6" barrel on my shelf for some time. After some interest I pulled it out the other night and was giving it a close look. It is new, BUT the question I have is, the top of it is flat. There are no serration lines on it at all. Obviously it is "ribbed" just no serrations on top.

Is this odd? Did it miss something at the factory? I bought this for my shelf awhile back thinking of having it nickeled and to "re-barrel" one of my Pythons.

Forgive me if my terminology is wrong, you get the idea of what I'm asking.

It never had checkering or serrations.

Unless it is a real ratty gun, I would not have it re-nickel, it can only hurt it's value.

If you going to re-barrel the other gun, I would make sure only Pittsburgh or Colt do the job as most gunsmiths have neither the proper equipment or the expertise to do re-barrel on a Colt product.

    Re: Python barrel question

I think you misunderstood me. The top surface of the barrel, where you look down towards the front site. It is perfectly flat. No lines (serrations) funning lengthwise with it. My other Pythons and the ones I see on the other post all have these lines on the top surface.

    That is my only question.

Like I said before, it was only a "thought" that I would use this barrel. I'm quite happy with my 4" and 2½" barrels.

??? You aren't talking about the vent ribs are you?

The top sighting surface on the Python on the frame and barrel does not have serrations. It is a matte finish.

    Re: Python barrel question

Well I'll tell you what guys... I'm NOT sure what I was smokin today beside Marlboro's... but you all get my apologies.

Forgive this old fart... was doing plumbing (all finished) today and working on the fuel injection on my Grand Cherokee (start and stop with gauge on it...has a fuel pressure leak down problem)... so I was "inbetween" when I was thinking about this. I had this barrel out (the blue new one) and was looking at it and to be honest I was getting PO'ed at myself for IIRC I had bought a 4" barrel, yet when I pulled this one out of my parts box and measured it...(full length including threads) it's 6"

I had bought this back when I had only the one Python, nickel 2½" barrel and believe it or not I wanted a 4"... so I thought this would solve my problem. Anyway it's been laying around here AND IT'S A 6" WITH A SMOOTH!!! SURFACE TOP (matte finish... JUST LIKE MY NICKEL PYTHONS! .

The two Pythons I have now are both nickel and one's a 2½" and the other is a 4". These both have minimal shots through them, but I do take them out and put a few .38 through them once a month. They are great to shoot.

So again, my apologies to all, just too many "balls" in the air and not a clear head...
