Colt Agent 2nd Edition ... Hammer Shroud ...

I have a Colt Agent 2nd Edition (parkerized) that has been stored longer than I can remember and I was thinking of putting it into service as a carry piece, since it is very lightweight ... Being of Alloy construction, what type of ammo is recommended for Safe, yet effective, shooting ... I may also use it as a back-up gun for IDPA competition ... Also, I am looking to buy a Hammer Shroud for this piece ...

Colt states that it is OK for limited used of plus P ammo. 1000 rds and then it should be check for wear. I mostly shoot cast wadcutters at about 800 FPS because I like the holes it puts in paper and cans. For carry I am using RP 110 grain plus p to keep the gun light. A original Colt hammer shroud will require that you drill and tap 3 holes in the gun. I don't know if Colt does these anymore.
Also the original shrouds came in either bright black or nickel finish. They appear to be made of a plastic material so posssibly flat gray paint would be a color match to your gun.

Waller (the Co. that makes range bags) still sells hammer shrouds. The frame will have to be drilled and tapped.

I have one added to my DS-II. The gunsmith found it challenging, drilling and tapping the holes in the stainless.
I also have an Agent that I bobbed the hammer on, and to tell you the truth, it's a better setup that way. The shroud tends to conceal the sights. The bobbed hammer is snagless, as well as the shroud is, and costs less.
I have another, black, shroud in the parts box, but I don't plan to use it when I can still get spare hammers to bob.

I agree with the above sight picture being altered. Meaning it takes longer to aquire a sight picture as the rear profile has changed. This may be little concern to a point and shoot gun though. A bobbed hammer would have the same snag proof feature for drawing out of your pocket but less ability to fire snag proof in ones garmet. The hammer shroud allowed one to fire the weapon IN a purse, bag or other carry device. The bobbed hammer would give a greater probability to do this also but would not provide 100% ignition as the hammer shroud due to its chance of conflit on the foward arc of travel. Although if it were myself, I would look for a spare hammer (I always like to put the gun back to original for resale) to bob.

Re: Colt Agent 2nd Edition ... Hammer Shroud ...

I have one of these I carried for yearsand still do on occasion. Had it refinished in a black parkerizing put on a Colt hammer shroud , which Gun Parts Corp may still have, got a set of original checkered Agent grips and a Tyler T grip. Carry it with either Federal 129 Hydroshocks or the Speer 135 Gold Dot which shoot closer to point of aim and recoil less than 158 grainers . Probably the best ccw and backup gun ever made. I have A DS a DS2 an older Agent and 2 Cobras. The ones that saw the most use were this Agent and my Detective Spl of 1974 vintage. A real shame these are no longer in production but they are out there . These D frames carry like belly guns but shoot like service size guns. the best 2 inch revolvers ever made.

Couldn't agree more. I carried one as an off duty piece for years. Still have it and still carry it. I'm so hooked on them I started a collection. Lets just say I have more than one now. Best 2 inch guns ever made.

Ditto . Great minds think alike. You know it is a funny thing . Everyone and his brother clones the 1911 autos, you would think someone would clone these revolvers. Too good to die.
