    38 ACP ammo?

I just picked up a nice 1903, 38 dated 1916 year. Hear is question, what ammo should I use in it? I have looked for 38 acp and auto but have not been able to find any. Is the ammo that hard to find or am I looking in all the wrong places? I went to several sites and found 38 special, and 38 super. I know they will not work, I at least know that much. I do have two boxes of winchester 38 automatic 125 gr sivertip H.P. that I had bought for my super 38. The box does not say super on it and they look like my super ammo. Is there another name for the ammo?

Check out this old thread I posted on .38 ACP ammo:

Is your 38ACP ammo REALLY 38ACP??

Stay away from that hollow point stuff you speak of. Don't fire any factory .38 ACP ammo through it that has a nickel plated case. I believe anything with a nickel case is rated for 38 Super and could ruin your gun. Also if these guns fail they can cause serious injury.
As you will see from my thread 38 ACP ammo can be a little confusing.
Ammo's not easy to find for these but it is out there. And when you do find it these guns are a joy to shoot and very accurate. I shot this 7 yard group offhand with mine at about 10 yards:

Thanks twaits for the information. You are correct, it is confusing, I had to reread your post a couple of times. Any suggestions where to look for the 38 acp?

    38acp

Look at GunShows. Found a box yesterday at a show but $45 for yellow box WW too high IMHO.
Ask some dealers, old gunshops find this sort of thing from time to time.
Twaits 100% correct, stay away from any nickle plated stuff. Watch out for brass case stuff too! If headstamp has SUPER or +P on it,do NOT use it !
Reloads for me. Only use brass cases,130 gr FMJ bullets.4.9 gr of UNIQUE seems to be powerfull enough to work the action but not too powerful that it beats the crap out of it.
`BTW,I have a couple TripleK replacement mags for the 1903 Hammer,Brand new in the package for sale. Bought a few of them, kept a couple for my spares, selling the rest. They work perfectly in my Colt, have run 5 mags full,no problem.Posted on the For Sale forum...........

I have run into ammo randomly at different places and got good deals. Usually $30 for a box. Sometimes less. Just keep your eyes peeled. Don't pass by any gun shop without checking. A lot of times gun shops have old ammo for sale.

You might try Stars and Stripes ammo. I think they custom load the old .38 ACP on properly headstamped cases.

Thanks, for the stars and strips information. That is the only place I found for the 38 ACP. They do make the ammo and it will be around 4 weeks before they make more. So if anyone else is looking you might call 727-530-1129 to get your name on the list. The price is 44.95, for a box of 50 with brass and stamped.

While cleaning out my reloading bench I found a brand new green and white box of Remington 38 ACP ammo. NOT .38 Super. Drop me an email if you are interested.
