    New member with Colt 1911

Just found this forum and looking to get aquainted.

I'm new to the 1911 but not new to the shooting sports. I have always had semi-auto pistols but never a 1911 until yesterday. I like the old war horses and the history that goes with them. I don't shoot in competition with pistols but I've done my share on the trap and skeet range.

Yesterday I went shopping for a new Colt 1911. We have a few dealers near by so I went through their inventory. To my surprise they didn't stock any new full size 1911 Colts. I found a pile of Sigs, Kimbers, Wilsons, and a few other new to the market 1911's but no new Colts. I guess they don't sell like the improved versions of the 1911.

I did find one used gun that I purchased. Not sure if I'm going to like it because it's different. The frame is very close to gov't 1911 except for the sights and finish. The big difference is the 38 Super caliber. I had to do some research on line when I got home to find out what I had. It seems it's a newer model (1991) 5" with the polished stainlees steel finish. Gun is in new condition with about 25 rounds fired. I purchased it for, lets say, several hundred dollars below the cost of new. I haven't fired it yet so still not sure if I will keep it. I had a 38 Super years ago and liked the caliber and if I have to reload for it it won't be a problem... I don't think.

Anyone else have a 1911 Super? They don't seem to be very common.

    Jim

I have 2 Colt 38 Super Autos. One in a Series 70 that I just replaced the barrel with a Kart Ez-Fit. We'll see if there is any improvement in accuracy soon, although it wasn't that bad. The othe a Special Combat Gov't Series 80. Love them both. Reloading is a must, reusing the brass makes ammo price reasonable.

I am also new to this site. I just joined the Colt family by picking up a Colt Government pre70 1911 and a 1976 Python. If I get a chance to get pic's I will post. Great site!

Yes, that's the one I just purchased. That finish will almost blind you. I think I'm going to like it once we get some time together.

I have two. One from 1947 and one from 1952. I shoot the 52 but the 47 is so nice it is a safe queen. Accuracy is not too bad but it is necessary to load the chamber from the magazine as the extractor sometimes won't bounce over the rim but instead pushes the cartridge forward into the chamber. Also handloading is a must. I had to laugh at myself when I bought a bunch of "comp" brass only to find out that "comp" brass headspaces off the case mouth and therefore has a body diameter sized rim. It didn't work too well. Currently I am trying to find a Combat Commander in Super .38

Are you shooting this gun or is it being put away as collector? I searched GB and nary a one showed up. Something tells me that it is an unusual and sought after model. Dealer said he was making a mistake by selling it. Jim

I have three Colt 38 supers and this one is my favorite. It's from 1951 and I have fitted it with a BarSto barrel and had the aluminum frame bead blasted. It's a lightweight commander and most of the finish was gone from the frame when I got it in the 80's. So I had the whole thing professionally restored.

On the topic of ammo, even though I handload, I recently bought some Magtech ammo that was on sale for $20/box of 50 and it makes a great practice load.

Joe, that is a very nice pistol. Obviously you like the Super. My next one will be a Commander in 38. I took my 1911 to the range last week and I learned a few things. I've not been actively shooting any of my 4 pistols as I'm trying to get my trap scores to a competitive level. I've never really been very good with a pistol (lack of practice) but I'm going to spend more time at the range to get up to speed. I couldn't tell anything about the accuracy so had a comp. shooter run a few rounds throuh it and he liked the accuracy and the feel. I've always liked the 38 so this Super is perfect for me. Now I just need to run 1000 rounds through it to break both of us in. Thanks for the replies. Jim
