Got any photographs?
Hello,
I am new to the forum and I would appreciate help in determining what type of 1911 I actually have. I have had this 1911 for 20 years but never had the time to research the gun. The serial number is 368XXX it has the eagle proof mark with an S8 below, the slide has the colt symbol in the middle of the paten dates and MFGs name. The slide has an 8 stamped on it,and the barrel has a G stamped on it. The gun does not have property of the US government on it anywhere but I remember reading somewhere that colt used some of its commercial guns to fill the government contracts. any information would be appreciated.

Keep Them In The TEN Ring!
I have photos still learning the site will update once I figure it out.
It is a military frame - not commercial. The frame was manufactured in 1918. Sounds like a WWII replacement barrel. Also sounds like the USP was removed, and the gun probably refinished after. (The USP was on the front, left side of the frame.) Without pictures, there is not a lot more we can tell about this one.
Welcome to the forum!!
I took the gun apart and can confirm that the underside of the slide is marked with an "8"and a "H" above the firing pin. I was able to find an "8" on the inside frame rail along with a "G: barrel is stamped colt 45 auto with,a "P" on the barrel lug, and a "G" on top of the barrel. I have uploaded a photo of the gun.

Unfortuantely, the photos are not large and clear enough to tell any detail. The "G" on the barrel should be on the bottom of the barrel, in front of the lugs... not on top - assuming it is a WWII vintage barrel. If you could post complete side shots, and clear photos of all markings, we would be able to give better info...
