    Looking for a 1911

    I just found a nice 38 Super.

I've never shot this caliber, does this caliber have any atvantages over the 45, 9MM or 10MM?

    Cost ??

    Thoughts ....

    Thanks

    Scott

Not as much anymore, but when it came about it was a favorite of lawmen because of it's increased ability to penetrate steel auto bodies. It will be softer and flatter shooting than the .45, and not as easy to come by as 9mm or .45 auto. It compares to the .357 Sig round, which is probably a little faster.

What 38 super did you find? Blue or Shiny. 10 Rounds in a 1911 that = .357 is nothing to sneeze at. Cost depends on what kind of ammo you buy. Armscor has always been good to me, same with Winchester silvertips. Do you buy Ammo online?

I bought a 1911 custom (polished stainless) in that caliber. I just bought a box of Fiocchi 124gr. FMJ for 18 bucks and change, or about the same price as 45 FMJ. I have not shot mine yet but I expect it will be a real sweethart based on another Super I've owned. I have a 45 Sig 220 and I don't care for the recoil. I went with 38 Super this time for that reason. Ammo is somewhat hard to find so I'm getting set up to reload. If you don't reload I would go with 45. Jim

It's a stainless 80 series, and I'll be setting up to reload.

I'm still up in the air on which caliber to get, I love them all ...

In addition to the positives listed above, the 38 Super does get you a couple more rounds in a single-stack magazine. Plus, I think it's fun to have something in a slightly different caliber than the norm. When your friends ask, "38 Super? What's that?" you can explain about how it was developed in the 30's as a round that could penetrate vests and car bodies back then.

I've got a Colt XSE Commander in .38 Super and I'm very pleased with it.

Ammoman occasionally has cases of AE .38 Super for sale, one of the better deals I've found if you don't reload.

dvantages are higher velocity and slightly lower recoil. Many years ago the guns suffered from mediocre accuracy most likely from headspace problems, but that was corrected LONG ago and todays guns are accurate and dependable.
