I am no gunsmith or refinisher, but I use very fine steel wool like 000 with a lot of oil over any rust.
Inherited a nice Model 1903 .32. It is in good condition, given it was manufactured in 1907 (SN: 546XX). The finish is worn, butfor the most part, in very good condition... The trigger & safety still have "traces" of blue... I am concerned about one very small spot of rust just above the trigger on the right side.
I would appreciate any advice as to how to remove it properly. By the way, it came with two original magazines, barrel in excellent condition & fires without any problems...

Put some Kroil on it, let it soak for a while, gently rub with 0000 steel wool, or preferably bronze wool. I even use a copper pot scrubber. Or you can use the edge of a copper penny to scrape, if you have to.

+1 on using the Kroil Oil. Great stuff. I also use a Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner pad. Both products do a great job on rust.

Do NOT use steel wool. Use only the Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner. Steel wool is very abrasive and will work just like sandpaper on the surface of the gun. The Big 45 is said to be harder than rust, but softer than steel so that it will not abrade the steel.
However, if the gun has only "traces" of blue, do not expect miracles. If the original finish is mostly gone, it is gone forever.
