    Yesterday's Whim Purchase -- a 1949 Match Target

Went to the range yesterday to sight in and get acquainted with a .40 semiauto I recently acquired, and on the way out stopped to look at the consignment shelf. There I saw this, a 2nd Model Match Target from 1949.

The gun has been shot a lot a lot and shows some wear, but it's not too bad -- maybe 95% finish remains. It was clean and well maintained inside. The Coltwood stocks are in great shape. It's missing the grip adapter and adapter screw, but those are available. I think it also needs a slide lock spring, as that function is a little iffy. Numrich has those.

The stocks tend to wiggle a bit on the gun, but I'm afraid to really crank down the screw.

Is there supposed to be a flat cap to the magazine base, or do they just look like this? Seems a little industrial, somehow, given the smooth design of the rest of the gun.

Nice gun. That was a worthwhile trip to the range! I think that is a later mag as the first 2nd model mags had the solid metal base, with aluminum U shaped thumbpiece. Wish I had beat you to it!

Very nice MT-I have a 1948 Target model that I've posted before. The magazine should have a flat floorplate and thumbpiece as described above, but that one will work. The originals are hard to find and fairly expensive.

Nice gun David; I'm always open to buying another Woodsman (like yours), but something else always turns up first.

    David,
Those 2nd gen. MT's have a wonderful, light trigger.
I'd be amazed if you don't shoot it a bunch.
Make sure the 'grip-filler' screw is indeed missing from the backstrap.
I think I have a spare filler in Coltwood...can't remember if it's the large or small version.
Anyway, if you can use it I'd be glad to send it your way.
I'll look for another screw, but I'm not too hopeful about that...(:>)

Don, thank you very much for the offer, but I have already ordered the missing parts.

I'm looking forward to shooting this one. January is becoming a .22 month for me. This gun and five uncommon revolvers in different frame sizes are coming my way. Hard to remember that I had promised myself to go easy on acquisitions for the first three or four months of 2012!

I'm in envy. Always wanted one of those but way too pricey in my neck of the woods.
