According to Chuck Clawson's "Colt 45 Government Models, "the first "new style" pistols were listed on Colt's books as C138533 to C138552 on Feb. 18, 1924 and those 20 pistols were sold to the Marine Corps. Serial C138553 went public on April 4, 1924. The Corps, as usual was first!
