Want a fancy 1911 in stainless

    Hey Guys:

I'm an old guy - 50s - who grew up in the 60s and 70s. The Colt brand still means a
lot to me. So now I'm old enough to have enough money to actually buy a Colt. I want a
real good 1911 - Colt - and I'm willing to wait. I'd like this to be something special that I
can hand off to my son.

I'm looking for recommendations. I prefer stainless. Thanks guys.

(BTW: There will be a Python in my future as well.)

You may want one of these. 38 Super Gov't model in bright stainless. Found it used in excellent condition for not much money. I had to have at least one before I die. It's my only Colt but she's a beaut. Jim

I had a similar urge in the 90s and bought the Super .38 in the attached photo, then added a few things. When I grew tired of my Officer's ACP's dull factory finish I had it nickeled. Not the stainless gun you are seeking, but it offers a comparison of a nickel finish vs. bright stainless. If I wanted another pimped-out Govt model, I'd consider getting a garden variety stainless pistol and spending a lot of time polishing it with Flitz.

This may be heresy, but I've yet to encounter a Govt model that couldn't benefit from after-market gunsmithing. If I were taking on your task of creating a family heirloom, regardless of what pistol I chose, I'd budget money for work such as a trigger job, accuracy job including match barrel and bushing, and possibly better sights.

Grips for pimp guns would merit a whole separate discussion. I'm happy with the cheap Ajax grips on my two specimens, but there are endless--and often expensive--other options.

I like your Super. I'm getting set up to reload for mine so I can burn a few pounds of powder. I understand about the trigger work, barrel and bushing but wondering about sights. I'm not an accomplished bullseye shooter by any stretch of the imagination and wondering how much more target sights might help. I see all the new comp guns with target sights so they must be important for bullseye. I have target sights on my 19 Smith and don't see where they help me that much. I saw a bullseye shooter do some fantastic shooting with my Sig 220 without target sights. Jim

I suspect you will pay dearly for one of these "100 Years of Service" Colt Custom's Bright Stainless:

"Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you:
    1. Jesus Christ
    2. The American G. I.
One died for your soul, the other for your freedom."

The newer Colts have pretty good fixed sights and if they shoot to point of aim, they are probably just as accurate. I have a 9x23 Govt Model fitted with a Bar-Sto Super 38 barrel; it shoots about as accurately as the stainless pistol with target sights. I bought one of the first Series 70 .45 Govt models and had Micro adjustible sights installed. Years later I bought a replacement Series 70 slide with fixed sights from Brownell. Again, it shoots about as accurately with fixed sights as with the slide with adjustible sights installed.

The advantage of the adjustible sights is when the pistol does not shoot to point of aim, adusting them is much easier than pounding on the fixed sights to move them. If one fiddles around using different loads, bullet weights, etc, the adjustible sights could also be an advantage. I should add here that in my highly biased opinion, the Super 38 is a handloader's weapon.

If I were putting together a Govt model today, I might well shoot it with the fixed sights and a single favorite load to see how well it did before adding adjustable sights.

    Hey Guys:

That stainless Commander in the picture up above is the schiznitz! I'd also enjoy a Gold Cup.
However, it seems like there simply aren't any new models being produced. None of the dealers
in OR have any and they tell me there were 6-10mo wait's last year. Aside from wait times this
    raises an issue of service.

Thoughts. Thanks guys, I'd rather spend my $ with Colt than another brand.
