Never heard of a SS SM Ace. The Custom Shop did put out some electroless nickel SM Aces: Colt Ace Custom Shop Electroless Nickel w/ Ivory : Semi Auto Pistols at GunBroker.com
Unless I'm missing something, or someone is making repro's you'd think Simpson's would know better??
Assuming a nickel job?

Thanks Skipsan, assumed an aftermarket job but if an original custom shop nickel version, not bad price. In any case certainly not SS.

besides a replaced trigger and grips, the simpson's ace does look like an aftermarket refinish to me.
This is rich coming from me with my so-so photographic "skills" but I don't think this gun has been refinished. I think the pictures are poorly taken as far as lighting and that the gun finish has been mis-identified by Simpson's.
I used the zoom and the stampings look immaculate. I don't see any rounded or over polished contours either.
I'm prepared to eat crow if you present a strong enough argument![]()
I had that Ace in hand while in Simpsons yesterday and at first I thought it was one of Colts electroless nickle Aces like the one I own. But on closer inspection I believe it to be aftermarket hard chrome. I don't believe the factory ever hard chromed these.
If you have had the benefit of personally examining the gun I certainly defer to you.
It just doesn't look refinished to me.
I saw that one earlier to day and wondered about it's originality, but do not see any hint of refinishing.
The serial number appears rather unique.
hey guys, not all re-finished guns have been polished or have edge wear. and not all refinshed guns were refinshed because of rust or pitting. sometimes someone will take a new condition blue gun, have the bluing stripped, and then add a more durable finish to it just because it's something that they'd rather have.
the old saying, "you pay your money and you make your choice" applies to situations like that.
they either didn't have the foresight that changing the finish would reduce it's future collectible value or they didn't care.
