    Woodsman Grip Spacers/Expanders

What series of Colt Woodsman came with the optional grip spacers/expanders? Have seen them on Gunbroker with and without the grip expanders. Was it just the series two model Sport or were there others. Have not been able to find any information and thought I would ask the experts on this forum. Have seen some listed with the term "small spacer" and others "large spacer". Did they come with two from the factory? Look forward to getting some info from all you guys. Thanks !!

I presume you mean what Colt called "grip adapters." The "Second Models" came with two different sizes.

All civilian versions of the second series Woodsman: the Sport, Target, and Match Target, came with 2 grip adapters, one large and one small. The Challenger did not have them, nor did the Air Force Contract guns. The early ones were made of a solid material called Coltwood, the later ones of injection molded plastic, in each case of material and color to match the grips. The color of the injection molded versions varied from the early multicolored swirl of red-brown-black that looked externally like the Coltwood version to a dull solid brown in the late version.

The intent was to provide for 3 different grip sizes by using either the large, the small, or neither. The same attaching screw was used for either size, and also served as a filler screw when no grip adapter was attached.

The attaching method is shown here:

Judge Colt: Thank you very much for the quick response and helping me with the correct descriptors. Too much reading on Gunbroker and their incorrect verbage. Do have another question: As for the grip adapters, were all the "Second Models" equipped with these adapters; was this an option; were they available only on the Sport or on all Second Models? Sorry for the run on question. Hope you understand what I am trying to figure out. Again, thank you very much for your assistance.

colt22dotcom: Great information. Am going to print and file with my other Woodsman information. I was able to obtain a First Model some time ago, with box, target etc. It is a Sport with the elongated plastic grips. The metal finish shows some age, but no pitting and the grips are perfect. Even has the permit issued by the city of Columbus, Ohio to the buyer at the time of purchase. My Third Model is in perfect condition, but sadly, no box etc. Hoping to get a Second Model soon and have seen so many variations on the auction sites, I have become confused. You have brought clarity to all my questions. Thank you very much. It is greatly appreciated.

Indeed he has JudgeColt. You guys are great. Always have owned a gun, but have gotten an interest in Colts at a later plateau in life. I have a lot to learn, but this forum is made up of a great group of contributors that are always there to assist. It is appreciated.
