Colt has announced the "up to 12,000" M45 CQBP over a five-year period.
Is that what you're refering to?

    From Colt:

"Colt Defense is proud to announce that it has been awarded an Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity contract by the U.S. Marine Corps for up to 12,000 M45 Close Quarter Battle Pistols (CQBP). The contract also includes spares and logistical support. The CQBP contract is for a five-year period and has a potential value of up to $22.5 million."

Claymore, I agree with you 100%! We all have our opinions and our preferences, but anyone that claims the 1911 is obsolete has no idea what they're talking about. Colt, S&W, Ruger, Sig, and another 20+ major firearms manufacturers produce a 1911 pistol. There is a very good reason for that. Because John M. Browning was an absolute genius over 100 years ago!

Is my math right? 12,000 for 22.5 million is very close to $2,000 per copy. Outlandish.

The cost likely covers lots of spare parts and things necessary to keep lots of guns running for years.

The contract does include spares and logistical support. I can't recall the numbers, and it differs by technology type, but in Defense Acquisition classes, I recall that the actual purchase of equipment is typically a third (or less) than the total cost of ownership. Logistics support for the life of the item (or in this case, 5 years, but likely could be renewed then) is the largest cost by far.

I confess, when I first saw the thread title, I know what MARSOC was, but also thought it was going to be a "rail gun" rather than a "gun with a rail." Really big difference between the two, as has been pointed out. I was wondering how they were going to power the rail gun on a Zodiac or other small boat....

While I am not knocking the pistol, I would say it is just as important to recognize the cartridge as it is still about as good as it gets in the handgun arena. Still in production since c. 1905.

Looks like Colt's test guns are failing before firing 12,000 rounds.
