According to the 1986 Colt parts catalog, the part number listed on the parts4guns website I referenced for a Latch Spr Guide for Colt model I-Python (SP56089) is the same part number used in all D frames.
For a latch insert, you can cut a piece of weed whacker cord of a sufficient diameter to press into the hole.

A1A, thanks for your tip on using the weed whacker cord. I had a length of cord given to me as an empty barrel indicator. It wasn't a tight fit in the hole, but it didn't fall out when I turned it over. Worked like a charm.

I believe dfariswheel was the original source of that suggestion at least as far as this forum goes, but that was so long ago that it is now in the public domain.

Oops, there are two subjects here. One is the spring guide, the other is called the latch insert and it is the piece of nylon/plastic that holds the latch away from the sideplate and acts like a glide. The spring guide is a steel pin with a rounded head.

That's the misunderstanding. The latch spring guide is a steel pin and can not be substituted with weed whacker cord. The latch insert is nylon/plastic and can be substituted with a short length weed whacker cord. They are two different parts performing two different functions, both related to the latch and thus the terminology confusion.

In the 1984 Parts Catalog, the part number for the latch spring guide for all D frames and the Official Police is 56089. That part is available from Gun parts for major firearms companies, gunparts. It is listed under Colt/ Model I-Python. A call is required.
