They may not work on that old of a gun.
There are several gun dealers around my area, but we have a serious shortage of good gunsmiths.
Was thinking of contacting Colt about repairing an old revolver. But was wondering what they might
charge.
Have a New Service in 38-40 that has good timing single action, but the double action timing is off.
Also toying with the idea of having it refinished. Yeah, I know that kills any collector value, but the finish is
worn enough that any serious collector would probably not be interested in it anyway. See pic below.

Wisdom does not come with age. It`s just that as you get older you become less physically capable of acting stupid.

That is true and you would need to check with them first. Lack of replacement parts is an issue.
To answer the question, first you must ship it to them overnight as required for individuals. They charge $30 to ship it back. Their labor rate has apparently recently gone up from $55 to $65 per hour, but they do seem to charge just 1 to 1 1/2 hours for most repairs. Colt's repair rates went up![]()
From everything I have heard, Colt will not work on any Guns that old.
Looks like a nice original New Service still showing some original Blue here and there.
If it was me, I would just get the Mechanical issue corrected, and, leave the original finish alone.
Having very recently checked with Colt's about my Series 70, I was told the labor rate is $64 per hour. They would have charged me $32 for 1/h hr. work installing a new trigger.
They will accept guns for repair that are shipped by an FFL and it doesn't have to be overnight. The FFL also has his choice of shipping methods. USPS priority or even USPS overnight is cheaper than UPS or FedEx.
Mike 1957, you didn't ask about this but I'm going to give an opinion anyway. I wouldn't have this New Service refinished. It may be worth more than you think it is even with the worn finish. That would depend on how much you paid for it I guess. A 38-40 is not the most common caliber for this gun. I think you will have to find one of the few competent Colt gunsmiths to have the repair work done as I doubt Colt's will still do work on it.
