    Commander "Doubling"

    Not a significant problem.

I dropped it off with a local gunsmith last week

What reasons could cause it to double when shooting rapidly?

During an IDPA match a couple of weeks ago, when I engaged the close targets and shot rapidly, it doubled on me twice.

I've heard several different theories so far from spring adjustments to trigger's too light, and I'm pulling it twice during recoil.

What say the Colt experts here?

It's possible the lugs on the sear are dragging on the disconnector.

It could be a multitude of things. Sear spring has too little tension or hammer hooks are worn or too short. Improper bevel on sear nose(worn out maybe), Over travel screw on trigger adjusted incorrectly. Or as you stated, could be human error. Have you done any work on the pistol recently? How many rounds shot through it? IMO that is an extremely serious concern. I would not shoot it again until it is fixed.

Yep, to the ATF, doubling is 'automatic' fire. No matter if it's a mechanical malfunction or not.
