Any ideas?
I just acquired a 9mm Commander, vintage 1970, that WILL NOT extract the cartridge. A fired cartridge that won't extract will fall out when the gun is tipped up, so not a tight fit in the chamber.
I thought it would just be simple to replace the extractor, but NOT!
I am presuming that the extractor for the GM is the same as for the Commander?
Colt's web site does not list an extractor except for the .45, nor does Brownell's.
Midway's catalog does not list a Colt extractor, except for the .45 either.
It does list 38/9mm extractors by several other manufactures, as well as for the .45 for those manufactures.
Prices for blued extractors range from $21 from Les Baer, to $45 from Colt (the .45), with the other well known manufacturers priced in between. Is there a difference in the quality?
A few minutes ago I removed the extractor from an old .45 parts gun. The small parts in it were brought to me from summer camp by a friend in the army reserve, about 1969. There were small differences in both length and width (at the tip end) from the one in my Commander. I installed it in the Commander slide with no problems. Is there any chance it will work?
Any help from someone with more knowledge than I would be appreciated.

My understanding is that an 80 series 9/38 cal. extractor will work in a pre 80 series but not the other way around. There is a difference in a 45 extractor vs. a 9/38 cal extractor.
Per Midway: "The difference between Series 70 and Series 80 extractors is a plunger retainer stud machined into the Series 80 extractor. This retainer stud holds the firing pin lock plunger in place on Series 80 slides. All extractors which are designed to work in a Series 80 1911 will also work in all Series 70 guns, however extractors designed for Series 70 guns lack the machined cut which allows the firing pin lock plunger to be installed and therefore can not be used in Series 80 guns."
I saw that on Midway's site.
What I wonder is, why no Colt manufactured 9mm extractor? They have had 9mm 1911's down through the years.
About to order the Les Baer one from Midway. Just received an order from them Friday. Don't need anything else now, so the $3.00 small order fee applies. If I add a couple of ammo boxes to get the order above $25.00, the postage goes up nearly $5.00!! E-gads!

Thanks, Retired. Had already ordered and received the Baer 9mm extractor. Of course the firing pin stop would not quiet fit the slot on the extractor. We are in the process of moving and do not have my jewelers files here. Couldn't find a file at any of the appropriate stores. Finally kiped one of my wife's emory boards. Just before the emory board wore out I got it to fit. Tried it out yesterday and today with about 75 rounds. Works MOST of the time. Occasional stovepipe. All problems were with the same magazine.
The 9mm was considerably larger on the hook end than any of the 3 .45's I have.
