    used Python hammer question

Is the hammer "fitted" to a frame like the other internal parts and therefore not likely to be useable in a different frame?

Thank you in advance for any input.

It is not so much fitted to the frame as fitted to the rest of the action, mainly the trigger and rebound lever (for rebounding ). While there is the definite possibility that it might not function well if substituted in another gun and perhaps could not be refitted to do so, it is also quite possible that it would.

A "rule of thumb" on all Python parts (and all the older Colt's) is that almost all parts have to be at least checked for proper operation even if they seem to "drop in".
In most cases a hammer can be used with most any frame since it's fit is different than parts like bolts or rebounds. It still needs checking and possibly adjusting, and there may be factors that prevent it from being used in a specific gun.

The hammer has a good number of critical areas that have to be right. Just some of the areas to be checked and possibly adjusted are:
The interface between the hammer and the rebound that form the rebound safety function that rebounds the hammer and locks it from moving forward.

The fit and operation of the double action strut on the front of the hammer. This has to play nice with the trigger, including by-passing the trigger properly in single action.

Fit and function of the hammer notch to the trigger.

Clearance between the hammer body and the safety connector levers.

    And more.
